Petrography is the scientific study of the composition, texture, and structure of rocks and mineral assemblages — and it underpins some of the most critical quality and safety decisions made in construction, mining, and infrastructure engineering. Western Geotechnical Laboratory Services (WGLS) is one of Western Australia’s leading providers of geological materials testing, offering a comprehensive petrographic analysis capability that spans aggregate and rock characterisation, concrete condition assessment, natural stone evaluation, alkali-silica reactivity screening, and weathering classification. Our petrographic services are conducted to Australian Standards (AS 1141, AS 1726), ASTM (C295, C856), BS EN 12407, ISRM, and Queensland Main Roads Q188 methods — serving engineers, geologists, concrete technologists, and materials specifiers across the construction, resources, and infrastructure sectors. All testing is delivered from our NATA-accredited laboratory in Welshpool, Perth.
