Rock Direct Shear testing measures the shear strength of rock discontinuities, rock joints, and rock-fill interfaces under controlled normal stress conditions. It provides the peak and residual friction angle and cohesion data needed for slope stability analysis, open pit design, underground excavation assessment, and rock mass classification. Western Geotechnical Laboratory Services (WGLS) provides accredited Rock Direct Shear testing to ASTM D5607 in both Single Stage and Multi Stage configurations. Single Stage testing is used where individual specimens are available and a single normal stress level is specified. Multi Stage testing applies multiple normal stress increments to a single specimen to define the full Mohr-Coulomb failure envelope efficiently. Both configurations are available from our NATA-accredited laboratory in Welshpool, Perth, supporting mining, tunnelling, and civil geotechnical projects across Western Australia.
