Soil classification is the starting point for every geotechnical investigation. It tells engineers how a soil will behave under load, how it responds to moisture, and whether it is suitable for its intended use. Western Geotechnical Laboratory Services (WGLS) provides a comprehensive range of accredited soil classification testing to Australian Standards and Main Roads WA specifications. Our suite covers Moisture Content by oven and microwave methods (AS 1289.2.1.1 / AS 1289.2.1.4), Atterberg Limits using the Cone Penetrometer method for Liquid Limit, Plastic Limit, Plasticity Index, and Linear Shrinkage (AS 1289.3.9.1 / 3.2.1 / 3.3.1 / 3.4.1), Linear Shrinkage to MRWA (WA 123.1), Shrink Swell Index (AS 1289.7.1.1), and Particle Size Distribution including Hydrometer analysis, USGA Turf Specification sieves, and D10/D50/D60 coefficient calculations. These tests give engineers the data needed to classify soils to AS 1726 and design safe, compliant earthworks across Western Australia.
