Visual material assessment is a practical quality control method used to verify the composition and character of pavement and earthworks materials. Western Geotechnical Laboratory Services (WGLS) provides two accredited visual assessment tests to Main Roads WA specifications. Limits of Foreign Materials (WA 144.1) identifies and quantifies the presence of deleterious foreign matter such as vegetation, clay lumps, and other unsuitable particles in pavement materials. Crushed Faces (WA 145.1) assesses the proportion of crushed particles in an aggregate sample, which is an important indicator of angularity and interlock for pavement performance. Both tests are routinely specified on road construction and pavement projects in Western Australia to verify material compliance before placement.
